Following on from our latest blog post we thought we’d share a weekly Wednesday instalment of wedding themed blog posts, including all of the finer details of the day and the planning process. First on the list is our beautiful flowers…
Choosing the wedding flowers came second to choosing the venue. Once we had decided upon the beautiful Bassmead Manor Barns in St Neots to host our special day we then had a better idea of the type of flowers we’d want.
We chose Bassmead as we were looking for a rustic barn that also had a modern, elegant edge… and Bassmead had just that! The ceremony barn is 300 years old and full of character and charm but the reception barn was built more recently and feels very stylish and contemporary.
The venue lent itself well to our wedding theme: ‘Botanical Glam’! We wanted to bring the outside in with plenty of natural foliage but ensure a touch of luxury too with lots of glitter and gold accents.
There was only one florist that could turn our vision and theme into a reality; Michele Gledhill.
We had seen some of Michele’s work on Pinterest and several wedding blogs so were confident she could capture everything we wanted and add her own personal touch to it too.
The bouquets were an organic mix of eucalyptus and rosemary with blush David Austin roses, white anemones and silver brunia. Both the bridal bouquet and the bridesmaid bouquets included cascading ribbons which fell from the stems and blew in the breeze… making for great photographs.
The bridal bouquet was completed with my ‘something borrowed and old’ – a locket from my Nan with photographs of my late Granddad’s in which was attached to the bouquet.
For the button holes we opted for a beautiful anemone encased in rosemary, eucalyptus and other fragrant stems. These were wrapped in twine and the stalks were left exposed.
Daniel’s button hole took inspiration from the bridal bouquet and included blush roses.
In the Rickety Barn, where the ceremony was held, we wanted to keep the floral decorations minimal. The 300 year old barn is so beautiful that less really was more.
The only thing we felt it lacked was a focal piece so we introduced an arch of lush greenery and flowers to the end of the aisle to say ‘I do’ beneath.
We also had chair ends of cascading foliage and roses which we repurposed to decorate the reception barn after the ceremony. These were used to decorate the bar area, the sweets & treats tables and were adorned to random wooden beams and pillars throughout the venue.
For the table centrepieces we decided on a mix of high and low arrangements to add different levels and focal points to the room. These were the same organic mix of greenery and cream flowers used in the ceremony decorations but arranged in either silver footed bowls or towering candelabras.
On the top table we also had a floral runner that span the whole way along, this was really striking and looked beautiful on the day.
Finally, rosemary was used to decorate each guest’s place setting.
The rosemary and eucalyptus combined made the room smell incredible when you walked in, it was like entering a luscious herb garden in the middle of spring.
Michele was incredible from start to finish; adding her creative flare whilst also putting up with us constantly changing direction. She has a real passion for floristry which is evident in her beautiful creations.
The icing on the cake (pardon the pun) for our wedding day was our 4 tiered suspended cake.
